"Irun Gipuzkoako ipar-ekialdeko muturrean dagoen udalerria da, Bidasoaldea eskualdean eta Txingudi badiaren bazterrean. 59.624 biztanle dituelarik, Gipuzkoako udalerri jendetsuenetan bigarrena da, Euskal Herrikoen artean zazpigarrena. Irunen Gipuzkoak Lapurdirekin eta Nafarroa Garaiarekin ditu mugak. Irun iparraldean dago Espainiako eta Frantziako estatuen arteko muga eta pasabidea, Pirinioetako ekialdean. Kokagune horrek sakonki eragin dio Irunen jarduera ekonomikoa eta sozialari. Erdi Aroan, muga zaintzeko funtzioa zuen Irunek, horregatik haren armarrian "Vigilantiae Custos" latinezko esaldia dago idatzita. Ikuspuntu militarraren arabera, garrantzi handiko tokiak ziren Irun eta Hondarribia eta horregatik Karlos V.aren gaztelua (mende batzuk lehenago Nafarroako Erresumako errege Antso Abarkak eta Antso Nagusiak eraikia eta egokitua) eta Gaztelu Zaharra daude bi herrietan. Bestalde, Madrilgo eta Parisko trenen lotura Irunen dago. Espainiako eta Frantziako errepide eta batez ere autobide sareek bat egiten dute Irundik oso gertu, Biriatun. Hiriaren ekonomia Frantziako eta Espainiako estatuen arteko mugaren garrantzian oinarritzen da, eta horren erakusgarri, Behobia barrutia da, bertan ZAISA dorrea deituriko ofizina dorrea dagoela. Bi estatu horien arteko mugarik garrantzitsuena da, Kataluniako La Jonquerarekin batera. Garraio-, trenbide- eta logistika-lotune nagusia ere bada, industria- eta merkataritza-gunea izateaz gain. 61.419 biztanle zituen 2008an."

"Irún (en euskera y oficialmente, Irun) es una ciudad y municipio de Guipúzcoa (País Vasco, España) fronterizo con Francia, país del que se encuentra separado por el río Bidasoa. Con 61 102 habitantes (INE 2012), es la segunda ciudad más poblada de Guipúzcoa tras su capital, San Sebastián. Sus principales barrios son El Pinar, Artia, Dumboa,Ventas,Behobia y San Miguel (calle Fuenterrabía). Es la mayor población de la aglomeración urbana situada en el estuario del Bidasoa conocida como «Bahía de Bidasoa-Txingudi» o, simplemente, «Bahía de Txingudi», formada por las localidades de Irún, Hendaya y Fuenterrabía. La economía de la ciudad se fundamenta en su privilegiada situación entre Francia y España. Su situación fronteriza le confiere una importancia indudable como nudo comercial, ferroviario, carretero y logístico. La presencia industrial más destacada en el municipio la constituye la empresa Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF)."

"Irun (old Basque for "fortified town"; Spanish: Irún) is a town of the Bidasoaldea region in the province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. Nowadays it is widely accepted by the historic researcher community that Irun is the ancient Basque Roman town of Oiasso on account of the vestiges (port, factory, etc.) disclosed lately in the historic nucleus of Irun, while the name itself may have applied to the whole surrounding area. One of the biggest towns in Gipuzkoa, its border town situation (it is located on the border between Spain and France, across the Bidasoa river from Hendaye), has made Irun into a commercial and logistic centre, with important railway infrastructure, where the SNCF 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) standard gauge rails meet the 1,668 mm (5 ft 5 21⁄32 in) broad gauge Renfe ones. Currently Irun features a fair ground provided with modern exhibition and telecommunication facilities just at some 100 metres away from the actual borderline at the Santiago Bridge (river Bidasoa). Irun is part of the conurbation of Txingudi bay with Hondarribia and Hendaye, the town being also involved in the Eurocité Basque Bayonne-San Sebastián (fr). One of its main festivals is the Alarde de San Marcial, a parade recreating an episode of the Peninsular War, held on every 30 June yearly. Its main sports club is the Real Unión where its football team plays in Spain's Segunda División B."
